Formulating Tips for Sensitive Skin

According to industry experts, 50% of the population have sensitive skin. Especially the face, which is different than the rest of the skin on our body, is heavily exposed to the environment, cleansed often, exfoliated and introduced to all sorts of topical skin care products. Research shows that most of us have a poor epidermis and poor stratum corneum and as evidenced by signs of irritation, brittle skin, itchy skin, rough skin, dull skin, and lack of resilience. Healthy skin resilience can be achieved by the following 3 strategies:

1. TEWL Reduction

TEWL (Trans-Epidermal Water Loss) pertains to the measurement of the water which goes from the body's inside to the surrounding atmosphere via the epidermal layer of your skin. To reduce TEWL prolonged sun and wind exposure should be avoided. Also, the skin should be treated regularly with potent moisturizing ingredients such as, for example, Hyaluronic Acid, 72h Moisture, Glycerin and Aloe Vera.

2. Reduction of Irritation

Avoid chronic irritation of the skin by limiting skin exfoliation to 1-3 times and week and not using too harsh and too acidic exfoliants. Also, use skin care products that contain a healthy amount of regenerating and soothing ingredients like, for example, Provitamin B5 and antioxidants including Coenzyme Q10 and Edelweiss Extract.

3. Improvement of Dermal-Epidermal Junction

The dermal-epidermal junction is the cell-free zone that is between the dermis and the epidermis. It serves as a selective barrier controlling the pass-through of ingredients and regulating the cell turnover which is about 10 days in the face skin and 14 days in the body skin. Ingredients such as SkinFirm Dipeptide, Palmitoyl Tripeptide-38, and Glycan Booster Peptide have been shown to improve the structural integrity of this zone and the cell-turnover leading to an overall smooth and healthy skin.
