  GelMaker EMU (thickner,emulsifier) 3 % 7.2 g / 0.3 oz / 1 1/2 tsp  
  Phase B      
  Distilled Water (diluent) 84.3 % 202 g / 7.2 oz / 3/4 cup 4 tsp  
  Dihydroxyacetone (tanning agent) 3 % 7.2 g / 0.3 oz / 3/4 Tbsp  
  Erythrulose (tanning agent) 2 % 4.8 g / 0.2 oz / 1 tsp  
  Phase C      
  Phenoxyethanol/SA (preservative) 1.2 % 2.88 g / 0.1 oz /60 drops  
  Fragrance 0.3 % 0.7 g / 15 drops  
  Citric Acid (acidulant) to pH 4    
         
  Method
Give phase A into a clean, disinfected glass beaker and stir. Give phase B into another disinfected glass beaker and stir until the DHA and Erythrulose are dissolved. Add phase A to phase B with moderate stirring until homogenous. Add phase C to phase A/B and stir again, adjust pH to 4 with citric acid, start with a small amount of less than 1/16tsp. The viscosity can be adjusted further with GelMaker EMU.

Properties
Smooth non greasy gel for the face or body. Fill the gel into a tube or into a jar.

  Hot Distilled Water 63.2 % 151 g / 5.4 oz  
  Xanthan Gum 0.5 % 1.2 g / 1/2 tsp  
  Phase C      
  Sorbitol or Glycerin 3 % 7.2 g / 0.26 oz  
  Phase D      
  Distilled Water 4 % 9.6 g / 0.43 oz  
  Erythrulose 3.5 % 8.4 g / 0.3 oz  
  Dihydroxyacetone 1.5 % 3.6 g / 0.13 oz  
  Phase E      
  Paraben-DU 1 % 2.4 g / 0.1 oz  
  Potassium Sorbate 0.3 % 0.7 g / 1/4 tsp

  Method
Give phase A into a clean, disinfected heat resistant glass beaker and heat it up to (maximum 150oF/66oC). Stir until the mixture is homogenous. Prepare phase B in separate glass beaker by sprinkling the xanthan gum into the water and stirring with high speed. Add phase B to phase A. Mix thoroughly and let it cool down to 100oF/40oC. Add then phase C to phase A/B and stir. Prepare phase D and add it to phase A/B/C. Stir again. Finally, add phase E and stir again. Adjust the pH to 4.5/5 using citric acid.

Properties
This self-tanning cream provides also some UV protection (mainly against UVB).

  Dihydroxyacetone 3 % 7.2 g / 0.26 oz  
  Erythrulose 3.5 % 8.4 g / 0.3 oz  
  EDTA 0.2 % 0.5 g / 1/4 tsp  
  Phase B      
  Xanthan Gum 0.5 % 1.2 g / 0.04 oz  
  Phase C      
  Sorbitol  6 % 14.4 g / 0.5 oz  
  PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate 3 % 7.2 g / 0.26 oz  
  Potassium Sorbate 0.2 % 0.5 g / 1/4 tsp  
  Paraben-DU 0.5 % 1.2 g / 0.04 oz  
  Fragrance 0.3 % 0.7 g / 16 drops  
         
  Method
Give phase A into a clean, disinfected heat resistant glass jar and stir in the dihydroxyacetone and erythrulose until dissolved. Sprinkle then phase B into phase A and mix thoroughly with a blender or mixer to dissolve the xanthan gum. Add phase C to phase A/B one by one and stir well. The pH of this self-tanner should be 4-5 (use pH indicator strips). the pH can be adjusted with citric acid.

Properties
After application on the skin, the tanning effect of dihydroxyacetone will appear after 2-3 hours, whereas the effect of erythrulose only after 1-2 days. This self-tanning lotion has no UV protection.
